The short version

  • Grunge is the one men's register assembled entirely from things that were never bought together, so the wrist cannot be matched to the outfit. There is nothing to match it to.
  • That leaves one rule: three mismatched pieces read as intent only if exactly one element is shared across all three. One metal tone, or one cord colour, or one width.
  • Pick the constant first and the rest can disagree as much as it likes. Skip the constant and the same three pieces read as clutter.
  • Leather, waxed cord and cotton rope sit inside the palette. Blacked-out and brushed steel sit inside it. A mirror polish spread across three pieces does not.
  • A flannel has a rolled cuff that stops above the wrist bone, so the wrist is on show most of the day and a 5mm to 6mm band is enough.
  • Five sets below, $39 to $69, each built around a single named constant.

A grunge outfit has no co-ordination in it. The flannel came from somewhere, the tee came from somewhere else, the denim was never chosen to go with either. That is the point of the look, and it is also why the usual advice about matching your bracelet to your outfit has nothing to work with here. The wrist in this register is governed by one rule instead: three pieces that disagree about everything still read as deliberate if they agree about one thing.

What bracelets go with a grunge outfit?

Leather, waxed cord and cotton rope, in black, grey, oxblood, olive or tan, with blacked-out or brushed steel at the closure. Keep one element identical across every piece you wear: the metal tone, the cord colour or the width. The mismatch is the look, and the single constant is what stops it reading as a pile.

Every other register tells you what to add. Tailoring wants one refined piece. Nautical wants rope. Quiet luxury wants the thing nobody notices. Grunge is the only one that cannot tell you what to add, because it was never assembled in the first place. A flannel bought second-hand, a tee that has been washed two hundred times, denim chosen for fit and nothing else: there is no colour story to join and no silhouette to echo.

So the question changes shape. It stops being what goes with this outfit and becomes what holds three unrelated objects together on one wrist. The answer is narrower than it sounds, and it is the only piece of grunge wrist advice worth writing down.

The one constant rule

Put three pieces on a wrist and the eye looks for a reason they are together. Give it one and it stops looking. Give it none and the wrist reads as things that ended up in the same place.

The constant can be any of three things, and it only has to be one of them.

One metal tone. Every closure the same colour, and the cords and leathers can do whatever they want. Three different browns, three different weaves, one silver tone at every clasp: that reads as a collection.

One cord colour. Black at every strand, and the hardware can disagree. A blacked-out box chain beside black braided leather beside black cotton rope is three completely different objects that the eye files as one decision.

One width. Harder to do and the most convincing when it lands. Three pieces all around 5mm to 6mm sit as a band rather than as separate items, whatever they are made of.

The Legacy shelf is the clearest version of this in our own range. Seventeen active builds: eleven braided-leather colourways and one steel-cable build at $59, plus five of those leather colours repeated at $69 where the only change is a gold-plated box clasp instead of a polished steel one. One construction, eleven colours. Verified on our own live catalogue on 19 October 2026.

That is the shape to copy. The build stays fixed and the colour moves. Two Legacy bands in different colours are a mismatch by appearance and a match by construction, which is exactly the trick this look needs.

Five sets, one constant each

1. Two Legacy bands, one build

The constant is construction. $59 each.

Black and Nardo Grey are the same 6mm round-woven leather rope with the same polished 316L steel box clasp. Worn together they look like two unrelated bands and behave like a pair, which is the whole argument of this page in one object. The grey is the useful one against black denim, because it separates without introducing a second colour.

2. Prime, smooth against woven

The constant is colour. Both black, $49 each.

Prime Black Rock runs a steel box chain through braided leather, so the metal shows in glimpses rather than as a band. Prime Black Smooth is one flat matte strap with nothing happening on it at all. Side by side they are the loudest and the quietest things in the range at the same price, and because both are black the pair reads as one dark block with two textures in it.

3. Eros, the hard edge

The constant is the frame. $59 each.

Both Eros builds are a 316L steel cuff with a soft material running through it: white cotton rope on the Steel, black leather rope on the Golden. This is the piece to reach for when the rest of the outfit is entirely soft, because a flannel and a washed tee have no hard edges anywhere and the wrist is the simplest place to put one.

If you want one piece that carries the mismatch by itself, the Duo is it: a 5mm steel box chain with marine-grade cord laced through the links, so the metal and the cord are in the same object rather than next to each other on the wrist.

4. Duo, chain laced with cord

The constant is width. 5mm, $59 each.

Silver and Black puts a bright chain against a dark cord, so the two halves of the piece argue with each other and the argument is the design. Black and Black runs blacked-out steel with black cord, which is the same object with the volume turned down to the point where only the texture reads. Wear either one alone and it still looks assembled, which is useful on the days you do not want to think about it.

5. Omega, cotton rope at the entry price

The constant is material. $39 each.

Omega is cotton rope with a 316L steel shackle, and it is the piece that looks most at home with boots and a tee because cotton rope is the only material here that already looks used when it arrives. Black and Grey together cover most of what this palette asks for. This is also the set to start with if you are testing whether you wear a bracelet at all.

Which constant should you pick?

Constant How it looks Hardest part Set above From
Construction Two colours of the same band, obviously related up close Needs a range that repeats one build in several colours Legacy Black and Nardo Grey $59
Colour One dark block with several textures inside it Easy to overdo until nothing separates Prime Black Rock and Black Smooth $49
Frame Soft material held in a hard steel edge A cuff has to fit; it does not forgive much Eros Steel and Golden $59
Width Three items that sit as one band on the arm Measuring, and resisting a wider piece Duo Silver and Black, Black and Black $59
Material Everything the same stuff, colours free to move Can read as plain if nothing has texture Omega Black and Grey $39

The outfit was never co-ordinated. The wrist does not have to be either. It only has to agree with itself about one thing.

A flannel changes where the wrist sits

A flannel shirt has a cuff that is almost always rolled, and a rolled flannel cuff stops above the wrist bone rather than on it. That is different from a knit sleeve, which creeps down, and different from a jacket sleeve, which sits on the piece. For most of a day in flannel the wrist is uncovered and the bracelet is visible from any angle, including from below.

Two things follow. A 5mm to 6mm band is enough, because nothing is hiding it and it does not have to shout to be seen. And the underside matters more than it does in tailoring, because a wrist held at a counter or on a steering wheel shows its underside to everybody at the table.

Buy the flannel first. This look is carried by the clothes and the way they have been worn, and no wrist piece rescues an outfit that has not been assembled yet. If the choice is a second-hand flannel that fits properly or a bracelet, take the flannel. The wrist is the last five per cent, and the last five per cent only reads when the other ninety-five is there.

The Bottom Line

Grunge is the only men's register that cannot be matched, because it was never co-ordinated in the first place. That makes the wrist simpler rather than harder: choose one element to keep identical across everything you put on, and then let the rest disagree freely. Construction, colour, frame, width or material, any one of the five works, and only one is needed.

If you want the shortest route, two Legacy bands in different colours at $59 each do the job on their own, because they look mismatched and are built identically. If you want to test the register before committing, Omega Black and Grey at $39 each is the same idea at the entry price. And if you want one object that already contains the mismatch, the Duo at $59 is the piece to wear by itself.

Questions

1. What is grunge style for men?

Grunge is a register built from clothes that were never bought together: a flannel over a worn tee, loose denim, boots. Nothing matches by design. On the wrist that means the pieces should look collected rather than co-ordinated, with one shared element holding them together.

2. What bracelets go with a grunge outfit?

Leather, waxed cord and cotton rope sit inside the palette. Blacked-out or brushed steel works. What fails is anything that reads as co-ordinated with the outfit, because grunge has no co-ordination to match.

3. Does grunge style work with gold?

It works when the gold is the only warm thing on the wrist and the rest is dark. A single gold clasp against black leather reads as a choice. Gold spread across three pieces reads as a different look entirely.

4. Can you wear leather and chain together?

Yes, and in this register it is the natural pairing. A steel box chain laced with cord, or a leather band with a chain running through the braid, puts both materials in one object so the mismatch is built in rather than assembled.

5. Is a flannel outfit too casual for jewelry?

No. A flannel has an open weave and a rolled cuff that sits above the wrist bone, so the wrist is visible for most of the day. The question is width, not whether to wear anything.

6. What colour bracelet goes with black denim?

Grey, oxblood, olive and tan all separate from black denim without fighting it. Black on black works too, and it is the quietest option on the list, because the only thing the eye reads is the texture.

7. Do bracelets look good with boots and a tee?

They do, because that outfit has no other detail competing for attention. With a plain tee the wrist is the only place anything is happening, so one piece carries more than it would under a jacket.

8. How wide should a bracelet be for a casual look?

A 5mm to 6mm band disappears under a sleeve and still reads on a bare forearm. Wider than about 10mm and the piece becomes the subject rather than part of the outfit, which is a different register.

9. Will a leather bracelet survive everyday wear?

Full-grain leather handles daily wear and takes on a patina, which suits this look. What it does not handle is soaking. Keep leather dry and route swimming and showering to steel or marine-grade rope instead.

10. Is a matching bracelet set wrong for grunge?

Not wrong, just a different look. A fully matched set reads as deliberate co-ordination, which is the opposite of what this register is doing. One constant across three mismatched pieces is the version that still reads as grunge.

Shop all men's bracelets

How many bracelets is too many?

In this register the ceiling is three, and it is a width ceiling rather than a count: three narrow bands sit flatter than two wide ones. We have a whole page on the count question and it is linked below.

How to combine bracelets for men?

Pick the one thing that stays the same, then change everything else on purpose. That is the short version of this page and it holds outside grunge too.

Are leather bracelets still popular?

Leather is the largest single material family in our own active men's range, and the braided builds outnumber the flat ones. It has not gone anywhere.

What chain looks best on a man?

For a casual, worn-in look, a narrow box chain with cord through it reads softer than a bare curb link, which is why the Duo sits in this guide rather than a plain chain.
