What $99 usually buys

Look at what the men's bracelet market offers around the $100 mark and it is mostly cord, woven nylon, beads on elastic, and plated steel finished to look like something else. Solid sterling silver, with stones set one by one in their own galleries and a jeweller's box clasp, normally starts at several times that. That gap is the entire reason this bracelet exists. Caligio has held one rule since 2020 - a bracelet should not cost more than $100 - and this is that rule pushed as far as it will go.

Where the money went

Into the metal and the build, and nowhere else. No plating, no filler links, no closed backings to save on labour. The band is S925 sterling silver at 92.5 percent purity, each stone sits in its own four-prong gallery, every gallery is open underneath so light can reach the stone from below, and the closure is a box clasp with a double safety latch rather than a lobster clip. Those are the four places a tennis bracelet is usually cheapened, and they are the four places this one is not.

How the clasp actually works

A tennis bracelet is the one bracelet style with nothing to catch it if the closure fails. There is no safety chain, no elastic, no cord. So the clasp is the product. This one closes in two stages: a folded metal tongue slides into a hollow box and springs open against the inner walls with a click you feel, then two sprung side levers fold down across the seam and lock over it. Opening it takes deliberate pressure on both levers at once, which is not something a sleeve or a car door handle does by accident. Closed, the whole assembly sits flush with the stone line and reads as part of the bracelet rather than as hardware.

Four prongs per stone, and an open back

Every stone sits in its own square silver gallery, gripped by four prongs, and each setting is linked to the next so the line flexes and lies flat on the wrist. The underside of each gallery is left open rather than closed off. That matters more than it sounds: light enters a stone from below as well as from above, and an open back is what keeps the line bright in a lit room. Cheaper tennis bracelets mount stones on a solid backing, which is faster to make and leaves the stones looking dull indoors.

S925 sterling silver, not plating

Sterling silver is 92.5 percent pure silver, with the remaining 7.5 percent alloyed for strength - pure silver alone is too soft to hold stones in a setting. That figure is what the 925 stamp certifies. It matters here because a plated bracelet wears through at the clasp and the underside first, exactly where a tennis bracelet takes the most contact. There is no coating on this one to wear off.

Where it came from

The style was called an eternity or line bracelet until the 1987 US Open, when American player Chris Evert's diamond line bracelet came off mid-match and play was paused while she recovered it. Press coverage renamed it the tennis bracelet, and the name replaced the original everywhere. The irony is that the incident was a clasp failure, which is exactly the part this bracelet spends its engineering on.

Sterling silver behaves like silver

S925 darkens slowly in air. That is the 7.5 percent alloy reacting with sulphur, not a coating failing, and it is the same on every piece of real sterling ever made. A soft silver polishing cloth returns it to bright in under a minute. Storing the bracelet in its pouch between wears slows the process considerably, because most tarnishing happens while a piece sits exposed rather than while it is worn.

What actually dulls the stones

Not scratches - skin oil and soap film collecting underneath the settings, where light is supposed to enter the stone from below. Because these galleries are open at the back, that is exactly where the brilliance comes from, and it is also where the film builds up. Wiping the underside with a dry lint-free cloth restores most of the sparkle people assume is lost for good. A 4mm line carries more settings than a finer one, so this matters a little more here.

Looking after the clasp

The box clasp and its two safety levers are the only moving parts on the bracelet. Close it by pressing the tongue home until you feel the click, then fold both levers down flat rather than forcing them. Never pull the bracelet open from the stone line: press the levers and release the tongue. Keep hand cream and hairspray out of the mechanism, since residue is what makes a clasp feel gritty over time.

Green wrist marks come from copper alloys, and fading comes from thin electroplating. Sterling silver is neither. There is no coating on this bracelet to wear through, which is the difference between a piece you own for a decade and one you replace next year.

Care

• Take it off before the shower, the pool, and the gym. Soap dulls both silver and stones, and chlorine speeds up tarnishing.
• Put it on last, after hand cream, perfume, and sunscreen, and take it off first.
• Polish the band with a soft silver cloth when it starts to look grey.
• Wipe the stones and the open backs of the settings with a dry lint-free cloth.
• Close the clasp fully, then fold both safety levers flat before wearing.
• Avoid abrasive pastes and ultrasonic cleaners, both of which can loosen individual prongs.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
