The French have a word for this leather, and it is somebody's surname

Stingray leather is called shagreen in English. In French it is called galuchat, after Jean-Claude Galluchat, a master leatherworker at the court of Louis XV in the 1740s. He was the one who made the material fashionable in Europe, covering cases, boxes, and instrument handles in it for a court that had never seen anything like the surface. The classic Galluchat finish was dyed green. Nearly three centuries later a turquoise stingray cuff is the direct descendant of that decision, and the reason a color this bright looks correct on an exotic leather rather than looking like a costume.

Turquoise is the only color in the collection that separates from skin

Most leathers sit near a skin tone somewhere. Black recedes, brown blends, red warms. Turquoise does none of that: it is cool and light at once, which means it stands off every complexion instead of settling against it. Add the calcified beads, each a small dome throwing back light at its own angle, and the cuff registers from across a beach or a room. This is the bracelet people see before they see you, which is either the reason to buy it or the reason not to.

A mineral surface on a living one

Stingray is leather carrying a coat of calcified beads, close to tooth enamel in hardness. The beads are almost indestructible. The hide holding them is not, and the 316L frame beneath needs nothing at all. Everything below is about the hide.

Stingray is not waterproof

Do not swim in it, shower in it, or leave it soaking. The beads do not care, but water pulls the natural oils out of the skin beneath them; the leather stiffens as it dries and loses the flexible bed the beads sit in. Occasional rain is not a problem. Repeated soaking, and heat applied to wet leather, are what ruin an exotic-leather bracelet. Caligio builds an entire waterproof bracelets collection for the wrist that lives in water.

Bright cool dyes and sunlight

Turquoise is a mixed pigment, and mixed pigments do not fade evenly. Under long ultraviolet exposure the yellow component in a turquoise gives way before the blue, so an abused cuff drifts toward a flat cold blue rather than simply going pale. This takes summers on a windowsill to achieve. It takes one pouch to avoid, and wearing the bracelet does nothing to the color at all.

Care

• Take it off before water, and put it on after cologne, sunscreen, and hand cream.
• If it gets wet, blot with a towel and dry at room temperature. Never a radiator, a hairdryer, or direct sun.
• Clean with a dry soft-bristle brush. Debris settles in the valleys between the beads, never on the domes.
• Condition two or three times a year with a colorless leather balm. Tinted balm will dull a turquoise.
• Take the bracelet off by sliding it sideways across the wrist rather than prying the tips apart.
• Store it flat in the Caligio pouch bag, away from direct sun.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.

The original gift box and velvet pouch must be included - returns without original packaging will not be accepted. Please note that a $9.99 shipping and handling fee applies to all domestic returns and will be deducted from the amount refunded.

Once your return is approved, please send the item(s) back within 7 days. 

For exchanges within the US, your first exchange is completely free and will be dispatched within 5 business days after we receive and inspect the item. Subsequent exchanges are at the customer's expense.
