The best gold chain has a steel heart

Gold is soft. That is the property jewelers love it for, and it is the worst possible property for a chain. A necklace does not carry its load evenly: every gram hangs on the few square millimeters where one link touches the next, and soft metal under a concentrated load does what soft metal always does. It thins. Links elongate, the profile flattens, and one day a solid gold chain opens at the point that had been quietly wearing away for a decade. LA Cuban Chain Gold is 316L stainless steel, roughly twice the hardness of 14k gold, wearing a 14k gold coating. The coating gives you the color. The steel underneath gives you the years.

What 14k gold coated actually means

Two different things live in a chain like this. The structure is 316L, the marine-grade alloy used for surgical instruments, and it will not rust, bend out of shape, or turn skin green. The appearance is a layer of 14k gold bonded to that structure, and appearance is a surface. Nobody looking at your neck can tell the difference. Everybody handling a solid gold chain of the same width would feel the difference in what they paid, and would still be carrying the softer metal.

Eight millimeters is not an accident

Below about 6 mm a men's chain reads as jewelry and disappears against a collar. Above 10 mm it stops being worn and starts being displayed. At 8 mm the Cuban link is unmistakable with an open collar, sits flat under a buttoned shirt, and lands at the width where the twisted links show their interlock instead of blurring into a rope. 316L stainless steel under 14k gold

Two materials, two jobs. The 316L core is the structure: it does not rust, does not tarnish, and does not turn skin green. The 14k gold layer is the appearance, and appearance is a surface. Everything below protects the surface, because the structure looks after itself.

Water, and what we recommend

Rain, sweat, and washing your hands are not a problem. Caligio recommends taking the chain off before a pool, the ocean, and anything involving soap or cleaning products. Chlorine, salt, and detergent attack a coating long before they reach the steel, and gold does not grow back.

The two places a chain actually wears

Not where you think. A necklace does not rub against your chest; it rubs against itself, at the interlock, and against the collar of whatever you are wearing. That is why chains lose their finish first at the back of the neck, under a shirt collar, and why the front section still looks new. Rotating the chain so a different section sits at the nape every few months costs nothing and evens the wear across the whole length.

Care

• Take it off before pools, salt water, soap, and the gym.
• Put it on last, after cologne, aftershave, and hair product. Alcohol and propellant are hard on any coating.
• Wipe with a soft dry cloth. No polish, no chemical dips, no ultrasonic cleaner: all three are designed to strip a surface layer, and the surface layer is the gold.
• Once a month, run a dry soft-bristle brush along the interlock. Debris collects between links, not on them.
• Store it flat or hanging in the Caligio pouch, never tangled with other metal.

Skin sensitivity

Green marks on the neck come from copper alloys. This chain is built on 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and copper-free, which is the safe default for reactive skin and continuous daily wear.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
