This chain is not silver, and that is the point

Sterling silver has one famous flaw: it turns black. Not from dirt, but from chemistry. Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in air, sweat, wool, rubber bands, and boiled eggs, and the reaction produces silver sulfide, which is black. Every silver chain anyone has ever owned has spent part of its life being polished back to life. LA Cuban Chain Silver never has that conversation with you, because there is no silver in it. It is 316L stainless steel coated in rhodium.

Rhodium is what jewelers put on white gold

Rhodium is a platinum-group metal, rarer than gold, and it is the material a jeweler brushes onto white gold to make it white and keep it white. It does not oxidize, so it cannot tarnish. It is harder than silver and considerably more reflective, which is why a rhodium surface has that cold, mirror-bright quality rather than the warm grey of polished sterling. Caligio uses it here for the reason jewelers do: it is the finish that stays.

Eight millimeters of Cuban link

The links twist and interlock, each one flattened so light travels along the chain in a continuous line instead of scattering point to point. At 8 mm that geometry is legible: you can see the interlock. A steel-colored chain shows this better than a gold one, because a cool reflective surface throws sharper shadow lines into the seams between links.

What you are actually wearing

A 316L stainless steel Cuban link chain, 8 mm wide, coated in rhodium. Two lengths: Medium at 52 cm (20 inches), Large at 56 cm (22 inches). 316L stainless steel under rhodium

The 316L core is the structure: it does not rust, does not bend out of shape, and does not turn skin green. The rhodium layer is the appearance. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal that does not oxidize, which means this chain has no tarnish chemistry available to it at all. Sterling silver blackens because silver reacts with sulfur. There is no silver here.

Water, and what we recommend

Rain, sweat, and washing your hands are not a problem. Caligio recommends taking the chain off before a pool, the ocean, and anything involving soap or cleaning products. A coating is a surface, and chlorine, salt, and detergent go after surfaces long before they reach steel.

Why it will not go black in a drawer

The classic silver problem is not wear, it is storage. Sterling left in a box darkens against nothing at all, because air carries sulfur compounds and silver reacts with them. Rhodium has no such reaction. A rhodium-coated chain that has spent five years in a drawer comes out looking exactly as it went in, which is not something anyone can say about their grandfather's silver.

Care

• Take it off before pools, salt water, soap, and the gym.
• Put it on last, after cologne, aftershave, and hair product.
• Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Silver polish and jewelry dips are formulated to strip a surface layer, and there is no reason to use them here.
• Once a month, run a dry soft-bristle brush along the interlock. Debris collects between links, not on them.
• Rotate the chain every few months so a different section sits at the back of the neck, where a shirt collar does most of the rubbing.
• Store it flat or hanging in the Caligio pouch, never tangled with other metal.

Skin sensitivity

Green marks on the neck come from copper alloys. This chain is built on 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and copper-free, which is the safe default for reactive skin and continuous daily wear.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.

If you ordered the wrong size, color, or simply would like to return the product, you can do so within 30 days from the delivery date. To be eligible, the item must be unworn and in its original packaging, free from any odors (deodorant, perfume), stains, or signs of wear. The original gift box and velvet pouch must be included - returns without original packaging will not be accepted. Please note that a $9.99 shipping and handling fee applies to all domestic returns and will be deducted from the amount refunded.

Once your return is approved, please send the item(s) back within 7 days. 

For exchanges within the US, your first exchange is completely free and will be dispatched within 5 business days after we receive and inspect the item. Subsequent exchanges are at the customer's expense.
