Burgundy, maroon, oxblood, wine: one colour, four names

The dark end of red gets called different things depending on who is describing it, and all of them point at roughly this rope. Burgundy is the wine word, named after the region, and the one most people reach for. Maroon is the same depth with a little more brown in it, the word American sports and academia use. Oxblood is the leather trade's name for it, used on shoes and belts for a century. Wine red, claret, and dark red are the everyday descriptions.

How a man wears red without wearing red

Bright red is a signal. It reads as deliberate from across a room and most men will not put it on a wrist, which is why the red section of any men's accessories rail is the smallest one there.

Depth changes the whole equation. Take the same hue down into burgundy and the colour stops announcing and starts behaving like a dark neutral with heat in it. In shade it looks close to black. In sunlight or under a warm lamp the red arrives, and the person wearing it gets a colour that rewards a second look rather than demanding a first one.

That is the practical case for burgundy over red, and it is the reason the shade keeps returning to menswear: it is the one way to own the colour without the announcement.

Wine and gold, which is older than any trend

Of the five Legacy Gold colours, this is the one where the metal has the most history behind it.

Deep red with warm gold is what wealth looked like for three centuries before anyone thought of it as a palette: Bordeaux labels, gilt lettering on leather-bound spines, club chairs and brass studs, signet rings against dark cloth, the interior of every institution built to look permanent. The eye has three hundred years of training on that pairing, which is why it registers as expensive before any conscious judgement happens.

On black, gold is contrast. On brown, gold is harmony. On burgundy, gold is inheritance - the combination reads like something that was always meant to go together, because it was.

The colour everyone is suddenly wearing

Burgundy has moved from a seasonal accent to a wardrobe staple in menswear, showing up on knitwear, outerwear, and footwear where black and navy used to be automatic. The reason is the same one above: men wanted colour without commitment, and the dark end of red is where that exists.

A bracelet is the lowest-risk way to buy into it. It costs sixty-nine dollars rather than the price of a coat, it works with the black and navy already in the closet, and if burgundy turns out not to be yours you have lost very little.

The gold-watch problem, solved

Mixing metals on the same arm is the mistake men make most often with accessories. A steel clasp beside a gold watch case does not read as an eclectic choice; it reads as not having noticed. A gold-plated clasp removes the problem entirely.

A box clasp, which is what fine jewelry uses

The closure on this bracelet is a box clasp, the mechanism fitted to pieces set with stones and made in gold and silver. On diamond bracelets it is not considered an upgrade but the baseline for responsible construction, because of how it works: a folded metal tongue is pushed into a hollow box, the tension in the fold springs it open against the inner walls, and it locks with a click you feel through the leather rather than hear. Two small buttons on the sides release it.

Gold-plated, and we would rather say so

The clasp is 316L stainless steel with a gold finish over it. It is not solid gold, and a solid gold box clasp on a leather bracelet would cost several hundred dollars on its own rather than sixty-nine for the whole piece.

What that means in practice is one habit: keep it out of chlorine and salt water, which dull any plated finish faster than anything else, and put the bracelet on after cologne rather than before. What it does not mean is green wrists - the steel underneath is nickel-free and copper-free, so even where a plated finish softens with years of wear there is nothing beneath it that reacts with skin.

6mm and 17 grams

Both numbers are the point, and neither changed for the gold version. 6mm is the width where a braided leather bracelet reads as substantial and stops short of becoming a cuff - thinner looks like a cord, thicker starts wearing you. The whole piece weighs 17 grams, so it has presence without weight.

Two materials, and both prefer dry

The braid is genuine leather, sourced from official suppliers and woven into a round rope. Leather is a skin and behaves like one: it takes the shape of the wrist over the first few weeks and holds it. A 6mm braid has more material to break in than a thin band, so it settles a little slower and then stays settled for years.

The clasp is 316L stainless steel with a gold finish over it. The steel underneath does not rust, does not tarnish, and has no copper or nickel in it. The finish on top is the part to look after, and looking after it is simple.

What a plated finish asks for

Chlorine and salt water dull any coloured metal faster than anything else, and they work at the edges first, where a clasp moves. Keeping the bracelet out of pools and the sea is most of the job. Cologne, sunscreen, and hand cream are the other half, so put the bracelet on last, after everything you spray or rub in.

Done that way, the finish holds. Skipped, it softens at the corners over a few years - and even then the steel underneath is nickel-free and copper-free, so nothing beneath it reacts with skin.

Keep burgundy out of long sun

Red pigments are the ones that fade first in strong daylight, in leather as in anything else. Day to day this is a non-issue - it is long, repeated exposure that lifts a deep red toward brown. Store the bracelet in its pouch between wears rather than on a windowsill or a car dashboard and the colour stays where it started.

Care

• Keep it dry. Off before swimming, showering, and heavy exercise.
• No chlorine, no salt water. Those are what dull a gold finish.
• Store it out of direct sun. Red is the pigment that lifts first.
• Put it on last, after cologne, sunscreen, and lotion.
• If it gets wet, pat it dry and let it air dry away from direct heat. Never a hairdryer or a radiator.
• Wipe the braid along its length with a dry cloth. Dust settles in the grooves of a weave rather than on the surface.
• Wipe the clasp with a soft dry cloth. Nothing abrasive and no chemical polish - both take a plated finish off.
• Condition the leather two or three times a year with a small amount of leather balm on a cloth, keeping it off the clasp.
• Store it in the Caligio pouch bag.

Skin sensitivity

Green wrist marks come from copper alloys reacting with sweat, which is why brass and cheap alloy hardware causes them. There is no copper here. Genuine leather touches the skin for most of the bracelet's length, and 316L steel handles the rest.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
