Round stones sparkle. Baguettes flash.

This is the whole reason to choose a baguette tennis bracelet over a classic one, and it is a difference in cutting rather than in quality. A round brilliant is cut with dozens of small angled facets designed to break light into many separate points, which is what the eye reads as sparkle. A baguette is a step cut: a small number of long, flat, parallel facets arranged like steps. It does not break light up. It catches it across a broad surface and returns it in a single wide flash as the wrist moves. On a full line of them the effect is closer to a run of ice than to glitter - cleaner, more deliberate, and far less busy.

Why the width goes to 5mm

A baguette is a rectangle, and on a tennis bracelet it is set lengthwise across the band rather than sitting within it. That means the width of the bracelet is set by the length of the stone, which is why baguette lines run wider than round ones as a rule. 5mm is where this design lands: real presence on the wrist, still short of becoming a cuff. The flat top surface also means the band sits level against the skin instead of rolling the way a round line can.

Step cuts hide nothing

There is a practical reason jewellers treat step cuts as the harder ask. A brilliant cut's many facets disguise inclusions and colour; a baguette's wide open table shows everything through it, so the stone has to be clean to look right. The same logic applies to the setting: with no busy sparkle to distract the eye, uneven spacing or a crooked prong is immediately visible. A baguette line only works if it is set straight.

How it is built

Each stone sits in its own four-prong gold-tone setting, and every setting links to the next so the band bends with the wrist and lies flat. The closure is a box clasp with a fold-over safety latch: the tongue clicks into the hollow box, then the latch folds down across the join and locks it a second time. That second lock matters here more than on most bracelets, because a tennis bracelet carries no safety chain and nothing else catches it if the clasp gives.

Where the name came from

The style was called an eternity or line bracelet until the 1987 US Open, when American player Chris Evert's diamond line bracelet came off mid-match and play was paused while she recovered it. The press renamed it the tennis bracelet, and the older names disappeared. What actually failed that day was a clasp, which is why the closure is worth as much attention as the stones.

A gold-tone finish asks for a little care

Treat the finish as the part that decides how long this bracelet looks new. Chlorine, salt water, and the alcohol in perfume and hairspray are what dull a gold tone fastest, and they do it at the clasp and along the underside first, where the bracelet moves against the skin. None of that is dramatic, and all of it is avoidable with one habit: the bracelet goes on last, after cologne and any skincare, and comes off first at the end of the day.

Step cuts show what collects under them

A baguette has a wide open table and a flat back, which is exactly why it flashes - and also why a film of skin oil underneath it kills that flash faster than on a round stone. There is nowhere for the light to go around a smudge. Wiping the underside of the line with a dry lint-free cloth restores almost all of it, and doing that once a week is the whole routine.

Looking after the clasp

The box clasp and its safety latch are the only moving parts on the bracelet. Push the tongue home until you feel the click, then fold the latch flat rather than forcing it. To open, lift the latch and release the tongue instead of pulling on the stone line. Keep lotion out of the mechanism, since residue in the box is what makes a clasp feel gritty after a year.

Care

• Keep it dry. Take it off before the shower, the pool, and the gym.
• Put it on last, after cologne, sunscreen, and hand cream, and take it off first.
• Wipe the stones and the underside of the settings with a dry lint-free cloth about once a week.
• Use a soft dry cloth on the metal. Nothing abrasive and no chemical polish.
• Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can work a prong loose on a step-cut stone.
• Close the clasp before storing, and keep it flat in the Caligio pouch bag rather than loose in a drawer where the line catches on other pieces.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
