Duo Black & Black is a 5mm blacked-out stainless steel box chain laced with a continuous black cord. Both halves are the same colour, so the criss-cross reads as texture rather than as two materials - from a step away this is simply a black bracelet for men, and only up close does it resolve into cord running through metal.

Two bracelets, one price. The corded version is a modern design nothing else in the range does. Underneath it is a classic thin box chain, the quiet kind that never dates. If you want the plain version, one cut releases the cord in seconds and the classic is already on your wrist.

On every other Duo the cut changes the colour. On this one it changes the texture. Cut the cord on a lime or an orange version and you are holding a visibly different bracelet. Cut it here and the colour stays exactly where it was - what changes is the surface, from woven and matte to smooth and polished black. It is the same piece in two finishes rather than two looks, which makes it the easiest of the thirteen to live with.

Black is the one colour that never has to be coordinated. That is the practical reason it outsells every other men's bracelet colour: nothing in the wardrobe can clash with it, and it reads correctly with a suit and with a t-shirt without any thought. On a chain it also does something specific - it kills the flash that stops a lot of men wearing metal at all.

Black finish over 316L stainless steel. 5mm as a bare chain, closer to 6mm with the cord. Three sizes, $59. Part of the Box Chain collection. Ships gift-boxed from Los Angeles.

The only Duo where the cut does not change the colour

On every other bracelet in this line, cutting the cord changes what the piece looks like. Release a lime cord and you are holding something visibly different; release an orange one and the whole character of the bracelet moves. Black and black is the exception. The cord and the chain are the same colour, so the cut changes the surface and nothing else: woven and matte becomes smooth and polished, and the bracelet stays exactly as dark as it was. That makes this the easiest of the thirteen to commit to, because there is no version of it you might not like.

Why so many men's bracelets are black

Because it is the only colour that never has to be coordinated with anything. Every other colour on a wrist asks a question of the rest of the outfit - does this work with brown leather, does it fight the watch, is it too much for the office. Black asks nothing. It reads correctly with a suit and with a t-shirt, and it does not change character between the two. On a metal chain it does one more thing: it removes the flash. A polished chain is bright by nature, and that brightness is the specific reason a lot of men decide a chain bracelet is not for them.

Does a black bracelet mean anything?

Not universally, and it is worth saying plainly because the question gets asked constantly. Different groups have attached different meanings to a black band at different times - awareness campaigns, mourning, sports teams, various subcultures - and none of them cancels out the others or applies by default. The same is true of which wrist it sits on: there is no established rule, only local customs that contradict each other. Practically, nobody is reading a message into a men's bracelet. Most men wear black because it goes with everything.

What a box chain is

A box chain is built from square links that seat flush against each other, so the band carries four flat sides and reads as one continuous surface rather than a row of separate parts. A Cuban link uses angled twisted faces that throw light in every direction, which is why it reads loud. A rope bracelet is round and textile in character, which is why it reads casual. A box chain sits between them - metal, but flat and quiet - and those flat sides are also the reason a cord can be laced through it at all. The cord has somewhere to sit. It would not work on a rope chain and would look wrong on a Cuban link.

How the cord comes off

The cord is one continuous strand with both ends fixed under a small metal crimp near the clasp. One cut at the crimp, then pull, and the whole thing exits in about five seconds. There is no knot at each link to pick out, which is the difference between this being a feature and being a twenty-minute repair job. The change goes one way: the same cord does not go back on, and returns are not possible after it has been cut. There is no hurry either - wear the laced version as long as you like it.

Two widths, both stated

The chain gauge is 5mm, and that is the classic bracelet you are left with. With the cord laced through it, the bracelet wears closer to 6mm on the wrist. Both numbers are here because a corded chain honestly has two measurements, and quoting only one is how a bracelet ends up looking thicker in person than it did in the photograph.

Which wrist, and what size

There is no rule about which wrist, and anyone stating one confidently is inventing it. The practical answer is the wrist without the watch, so the two do not knock against each other - which for most right-handed men means the right. On sizing: the average adult male wrist falls between roughly 7 and 7.5 inches, which is why Medium is the size most men need. Measure with a tape or a strip of paper, add about half an inch, and buy to that number rather than guessing.

And it is $59

Caligio has held one rule since 2020: no bracelet over $100. A steel box chain built this way is normally priced well into the hundreds by the time it reaches a shop window. There is no ten-fold markup sitting between the workshop and the wrist here - you are paying for the chain, the cord, and the construction, and getting two finished bracelets for what most brands charge for one.

Two materials, one routine

Steel and marine-grade cord are both unaffected by water, which is the practical advantage this combination has over leather. Rinse the bracelet under clean water when it needs it and dry it with a soft cloth. Nothing here swells, stiffens, or has to be kept out of the rain.

The black finish is the part to look after

The 316L steel underneath will not rust and will not mark the skin, so the finish is what decides how long the bracelet looks new. Chlorine and salt water are what dull a coloured metal fastest, and they work at the clasp first, where the bracelet moves most. Take it off before the pool, and treat the finish the way you would any dark metal.

Where dirt collects

On a corded chain it is under the cord rather than on top of it. Rinse and let the water run through the weave rather than wiping only the surface, then dry it properly. Once the cord is off, the bare chain needs nothing but an occasional wipe.

Care

  • Rinse under clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Take it off before the pool. Chlorine dulls a black finish faster than anything else.
  • Put it on after cologne and skincare rather than before.
  • Use a soft dry cloth on the metal. Nothing abrasive and no chemical polish.
  • Store it flat in the Caligio pouch bag rather than loose in a drawer.
  • When you cut the cord, cut at the crimp near the clasp and pull the strand out whole.

What is a convertible bracelet?

A single bracelet built to be worn in two finished states rather than one. This one is a black steel box chain laced with black cord: worn as it arrives it is matte and woven, and once the cord is cut and pulled free it becomes a plain polished black chain. Both states are finished pieces, not a piece and a leftover.

Why do men wear black bracelets?

Mostly for the simplest reason there is: black never has to be coordinated. Every other colour asks a question of the rest of the outfit, and black asks nothing - it reads correctly with a suit and with a t-shirt without changing character. On a metal chain it also removes the flash, which is the specific thing that stops many men wearing one.

Does a black bracelet mean anything?

Not universally. Different groups have attached different meanings to a black band at different times - awareness campaigns, mourning, sports teams, various subcultures - and none of them cancels out the others or applies by default. Practically, nobody is reading a message into a men's bracelet. Most men wear black because it goes with everything.

Does it matter which wrist a black bracelet goes on?

No. There is no established rule, only local customs that contradict each other, so left and right carry no fixed meaning. The practical answer is the wrist without the watch, so the two do not knock against each other - which for most right-handed men means the right.

What changes when you cut the cord?

On this version, only the texture. Every other colour in the line changes appearance when the cord comes off; here the cord and chain are the same black, so the bracelet stays exactly as dark and simply moves from woven and matte to smooth and polished. It is one piece in two finishes rather than two different looks.

What is the average male wrist size?

Roughly 7 to 7.5 inches for an adult man, which is why Medium is the size most men need. Below about 6.7 inches take Small; above 7.2 take Large. Measure with a tape or a strip of paper and add about half an inch rather than guessing.

How do you remove the cord?

The cord is one continuous strand with both ends fixed under a small metal crimp near the clasp. Cut once at the crimp and pull: the whole cord exits in about five seconds. There is no knot at each link to pick out, which is the difference between this working and it being a twenty-minute job.

Can the cord go back on?

Not the same one. The cut releases it in one piece and it has done its job by then. There is no hurry to cut at all - wear the laced version as long as you enjoy it. Returns are not possible once the cord has been cut, so make the decision before you pick up the scissors.

What is a box chain?

A chain built from square links that sit flush against one another, so the band has four flat sides and reads as one continuous surface. Compared to a rope it is more structured; compared to a Cuban link it is quieter, because there are no angled faces throwing light in every direction. Those flat sides are also why a cord can be laced through it.

How wide is it really?

Two numbers, and both are honest. The chain gauge is 5mm - that is the classic bracelet you are left with. With the cord laced through it, the bracelet wears closer to 6mm. Anyone quoting one number for a corded chain is quoting the one that suits them.

Will it turn my wrist green?

No. Green marks come from copper in brass and alloy bracelets. This is 316L stainless steel, which is nickel-free and copper-free, so there is nothing in the metal to react with skin.

Can I wear it in water?

Yes. Steel and marine-grade cord are both unaffected by water, which is the practical advantage of this combination over leather. Rinse it and dry it with a soft cloth. Keep chlorine off the black finish, as with any coloured metal.

Which size should I order?

Measure your wrist with a tape or a strip of paper and add roughly half an inch. Small fits up to 6.7 inches, Medium up to 7.2, Large up to 8. Remember the cord adds bulk - the bracelet sits a little slimmer once it is off.

How is it $59?

Caligio has held one rule since 2020: no bracelet over $100. A steel box chain built this way is normally priced well into the hundreds by the time it reaches a shop window, and we do not price that way. You are paying for the chain and the construction rather than for the markup, and getting two bracelets rather than one.

Is it a good gift?

Black is the safest colour to give because nothing in the other person's wardrobe can clash with it, and this version adds a second bracelet inside the first. Easy to explain in a sentence, and taking the cord off works as a small ritual rather than as damage. Ships gift-boxed from Los Angeles.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
