Everyone knows the first number. Almost nobody asks about the second, and the second is what determines how the piece behaves on your wrist.

Pure silver is too soft for jewelry - a bracelet made of it would bend out of shape in a pocket. So it is alloyed, and that 7.5 percent is what makes sterling wearable at all.

Usually it is copper. Copper is what gives sterling its hardness, and copper is also why sterling tarnishes faster than fine silver and can occasionally leave a faint green mark on skin.

Sometimes it is nickel. Less common, unmarked, and impossible to detect from the 925 stamp - which matters if your skin has ever reacted to jewelry.

Occasionally it is germanium. Some modern sterling alloys substitute germanium to slow tarnishing considerably. They are excellent, they are labelled as such by the makers who use them, and they cost more.

The 925 stamp tells you the silver content and nothing else. Two bracelets both correctly stamped 925 can tarnish at different rates and behave differently on skin, because the stamp says nothing about the remaining 7.5 percent. That is the single most useful thing to understand about sterling.

Why 925 Silver Can Be So Cheap

The question comes up constantly on marketplaces, where a sterling bracelet can cost less than dinner. There are three honest reasons and one trap.

Silver is genuinely inexpensive relative to gold. The spot price difference between the two metals is enormous, so the same weight of metal costs a small fraction of what gold would.

Manufacturing at scale is cheap. Casting silver is a mature, high-volume industry, and a simple design produced in quantity carries very little labour cost per piece.

Selling direct removes margin. The same structural saving that lets any brand price sharply applies here too.

And the trap: weight. Silver is priced by the gram, so the honest variable between a $25 silver bracelet and a $200 one is usually how much metal is in it. A very low price on something described as solid silver normally means thin walls, hollow links or a delicate section - none of which is fraud, but all of which is a different object from the one in the photograph.

A link bracelet is where sterling's maintenance problem is worst, and the reason is geometry rather than chemistry: a chain darkens first in the recesses between links, which is precisely where a polishing cloth cannot reach. Ten minutes of polishing restores the visible faces and leaves the shadows dark. In 316L that failure mode does not exist - there is no tarnish to reach. The honest trade is that this bracelet is worth nothing at a pawn shop and a sterling one is worth something.

Does It Always Tarnish? Yes

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds present in ordinary air to form silver sulphide, which is the dark film. There is no version of sterling that does not do this, and the price of the piece has no bearing on the schedule.

What does affect the schedule is exposure, and this is the practically useful part - tarnish accelerators are specific and mostly avoidable.

The counterintuitive one is that wearing silver often keeps it brighter than storing it, because skin contact and movement continuously buff the surface. A sterling bracelet left in a drawer for a year comes out darker than one worn every day.

Seven kinds of buyer, and we would rather they bought steel, titanium or nothing than be disappointed.

  1. Anyone who will not maintain it. This is the big one. Sterling needs polishing, and a man who resents that will own a dark bracelet within months and conclude it was badly made.
  2. Anyone whose skin has reacted to jewelry before. Most sterling is copper-alloyed and fine, but nickel appears in some sterling and the 925 stamp will not tell you. If you already know your skin is sensitive, titanium is the safer starting point.
  3. Swimmers and pool users. Chlorine forms silver chloride, which is duller than ordinary tarnish and considerably harder to polish away.
  4. Anyone who works with their hands. Sterling is softer than steel and scratches and deforms more readily, which matters on a bracelet that meets tools and surfaces all day.

A solid cuff is the shape where silver's softness shows most, because a cuff is flexed to fit and has to hold that shape afterwards. Sterling of the same thickness gives more easily and takes marks more readily than steel does. Fine silver at 999 is 99.9 percent pure, and the temptation is to assume purer is better. For bracelets it usually is not.

999 tarnishes considerably more slowly, because there is almost no copper present to react. That is a real advantage. But it is also soft enough to bend under ordinary handling, scratch from contact with a desk and lose a crisp edge quickly - which is exactly why sterling was invented in the first place.

The 925 against 999 comparison is really a hardness argument, and it applies just as directly to the steel choice. A forged cuff has to survive being pressed open and closed to fit and then hold that shape for years - 316L does that without complaint, where softer metals gradually lose their spring. It is also why a steel cuff can be made thinner than a silver one for the same rigidity, which changes how it looks as well as how it lasts.

An open cuff sized by the wearer is a design that depends on the metal keeping its spring through hundreds of small adjustments. Why We Chose Steel

Not because silver is worse. Because we were designing for a specific life, and that life had three features.
