Indigo, violet, amethyst: three words for where this sits

Colour names get loose at the dark end of purple, so here is the honest description. The most expensive colour in history, and the one that escaped

Purple has a strange double history and this bracelet sits on both halves of it.

Tyrian purple, the imperial one, was extracted from sea snails on the Phoenician coast - thousands of them for a single garment. It cost more than its weight in gold, and Roman law eventually restricted it to emperors alone. Wearing purple was not a taste, it was a legal claim to rank.

Indigo was the opposite story. Also ancient, also traded across continents for four thousand years, but obtainable - a plant dye that moved along the routes from India through Egypt to Europe and eventually became the reason blue jeans are blue. A dark dye on a fiber built to hold it

Deep colours are the hardest to keep, because every fade shows against the original tone. This rope is braided from the fiber family used for sailing line: it barely absorbs water, dries fast, and holds dye the way natural fibers never have. Salt water is the one to manage

Salt will not destroy the bracelet, but it crystallizes inside a braid as it dries, and crystals scatter light. On a dark colour that reads as a chalky film rather than a fade. Rinse in fresh water after the ocean and let it air dry, and the indigo stays deep.

Sun is slower than salt, but it is the other one

• Put it on last, after sunscreen, cologne, and hand cream. Oil settles into a braid and holds dust.
• Shower, rain, sweat, fresh water: no action needed. Salt water: rinse fresh and air dry.
• Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. No bleach, no machine wash.
• Wipe the shackle with a soft dry cloth. It needs nothing else.

Skin sensitivity

Green wrist marks come from copper alloys. The Fortune shackle is 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and copper-free, the alloy dermatologists point to as the safe default for reactive skin and continuous daily wear.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
