What 5A actually means

Cubic zirconia is graded A, AAA, AAAAA - commonly written 5A - and the grade is not marketing language. It describes how precisely the stone is cut and how clean it is. Lower grades are cut to loose tolerances with cloudy inclusions, which is why a cheap tennis bracelet looks convincing in a product photo and flat grey under office lighting. A 5A stone is cut to diamond proportions with a clean polished table, so light entering the crown actually comes back out of it. That single specification is the difference between a piece that reads expensive across a table and one that does not.

Round brilliant: the cut people picture

A round brilliant carries dozens of small angled facets arranged to break incoming light into many separate points. That scatter is what the eye registers as sparkle, and it is why the round cut has been the default for tennis bracelets since the style got its name. It is the busier and brighter of the two options, and the one that reads immediately as jewelry rather than as a design object. The baguette version in this sale takes the opposite approach: broad flat step-cut facets that flash rather than scatter.

Gold over steel, and why that order matters

Plating is only as good as what sits underneath it. Most gold-tone bracelets at this price plate over brass or zinc alloy, and once the plating wears at the clasp the base metal oxidises and marks the skin. This one is plated over a stainless steel core, which is the reason it will not turn a wrist green even where the finish eventually softens with wear.

The clasp is the whole security

A tennis bracelet is the one bracelet style with no safety chain and no cord running through it. If the closure lets go, the entire line goes with it. This one uses a box clasp: a folded metal tongue slides into a hollow box and springs open against the inner walls, holding by its own tension until it is deliberately pressed to release. Closed, it sits flush with the stone line.

Where the name came from

The style was called an eternity or line bracelet until the 1987 US Open, when American player Chris Evert's diamond line bracelet came off mid-match and play was paused while she recovered it. The press renamed it the tennis bracelet and the older names disappeared. What failed that day was a clasp, which is why the closure deserves as much attention as the stones.

The plating is what needs looking after

The steel underneath will not rust and will not mark the skin, so the gold finish is the part that decides how long this bracelet looks new. What wears it is not scratching but chemistry: chlorine, salt water, and the alcohol in perfume and hairspray. They work fastest at the clasp and along the underside, where the bracelet moves against skin. One habit covers all of it - the bracelet goes on last, after cologne and any skincare, and comes off first at the end of the day.

Brightness lives under the stones

A round brilliant is built to take light in through the crown and send it back out, and a film of skin oil on the pavilion underneath blocks exactly that path. This is why a tennis bracelet looks tired long before anything is actually wrong with it. Wiping the underside of the line with a dry lint-free cloth restores nearly all of it, and once a week is enough.

The clasp

The box clasp is the only moving part. Press the tongue home until you feel it seat, and open it by releasing the clasp rather than pulling on the stone line. Keep lotion out of the mechanism, since residue inside the box is what makes a clasp feel gritty over time.

Care

• Keep it dry. Take it off before the shower, the pool, and the gym.
• Put it on last, after cologne, sunscreen, and hand cream, and take it off first.
• Wipe the stones and the underside of the settings with a dry lint-free cloth about once a week.
• Use a soft dry cloth on the metal. Nothing abrasive and no chemical polish, both of which strip plating.
• Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can work a prong loose.
• Close the clasp before storing, and keep it flat in the Caligio pouch bag rather than loose in a drawer.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
