Khaki, olive, army green: three names for one rope

The names blur, so here is the plain version. Khaki is originally a Persian and Urdu word meaning dust or earth, adopted by British troops in India in the 1840s when white uniforms proved to be a poor idea in the field. Olive drab is the American military term for the deeper green-brown that replaced it. Army green and military green are the everyday names for the same family. Olive green is what the fashion trade calls it on a rail.

This rope sits in the middle of all of them: deep enough to read as olive, warm enough to read as khaki, and neutral enough that it does not look like a colour choice at all.

The green that stopped being a colour

This is the reason olive works on men who avoid green on principle, and it is worth understanding before you buy it.

Olive did not arrive in menswear through fashion. It arrived through equipment. The M-65 field jacket, the MA-1 flight jacket, canvas duffels, ammunition pouches, tool rolls, Jeep canvas, tent fabric. Decades of that do something specific to a colour: it stops being a statement and becomes a default, the way navy did and the way khaki trousers did. A man who would refuse a green bracelet on sight will wear an olive one without noticing the contradiction, and he is not wrong to.

The practical consequence is that it behaves like a neutral. Olive sits with everything brown does - denim, khaki, tan, every shade of grey - but it runs cooler than brown, so unlike brown it does not fight black.

A shackle is kit, not jewellery

The closure here matters more on this colour than on any other in the collection. A D-shackle is a working part: it comes from rigging, where a steel bow and a screw-down pin hold load on a boat deck and the pin is what you check before you trust it. To be clear about what it is not: this is not a survival bracelet. There is no paracord to unravel, no compass, no firestarter, and nothing on it is issued or tactical. What olive does to the rest of your clothes

It is the most flexible colour in the Fortune line and the least common anywhere. Denim first, because indigo and olive are the oldest workwear pairing there is. Then white, cream, khaki, tan, grey, and black. Against a black tee it is the only colour in the outfit and does not have to shout to be that. On a tanned forearm in summer it disappears into the skin tone in a way brighter colours never manage.

The shackle changes the register. Black matte completes the field look and is the quietest of the three. Silver keeps it modern and matches a steel watch. Gold on olive is the unexpected one - warm metal on a cool green - and it is the combination people ask about.

Same rope, different weather

Underneath the colour this is the same build as every Fortune: two strands of braided Milan rope, a 316L stainless steel D-shackle, and the red accent thread. The rope is from the fiber family used for sailing line - abrasion-resistant, colorfast, and it barely absorbs water. A field colour on a fiber built to keep it

Olive is a forgiving colour and a hard one to fade badly, which is part of why it lasted in military use for a century. This rope is braided from the fiber family used for sailing line: it barely absorbs water, dries fast, and holds dye far better than natural fibers. The shackle is 316L stainless steel, the marine-grade alloy. Showers, rain, sweat, and fresh water are non-events for both.

Salt water is the one to manage

Salt will not destroy the bracelet, but it crystallizes inside a braid as it dries and crystals scatter light, which on an earthy colour reads as a dusty film. Rinse in fresh water after the ocean and let it air dry.

Dirt suits it, oil does not

Olive is the one colour in the line where a bit of wear looks right rather than wrong, so there is no need to baby it. What does dull it is oil: sunscreen, cologne, and hand cream settle into a braid and hold dust. Put the bracelet on last, after everything you spray or rub in.

Skin sensitivity

Green wrist marks come from copper alloys. The Fortune shackle is 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and copper-free, the alloy dermatologists point to as the safe default for reactive skin and continuous daily wear.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
