Cognac, caramel, terracotta: one colour, three trades

Warm browns get called different things depending on who is selling them, so here is the plain version. Cognac is what leather makers call this tone, named after the brandy it matches - it is the standard warm tan on a boot, a belt, or a watch strap. Caramel is the same colour in fashion copy, a touch lighter in most people's heads. Terracotta is the ceramics word for it, the fired-clay red-brown. Tan and camel sit one step paler.

This rope is the leather version: brown with red under it, warm rather than cool, and dark enough to stay masculine rather than going beige.

The brown that is already in your closet

This is the practical argument and it is the whole reason cognac outsells every other brown in menswear.

Black is neutral - it goes with everything by not competing with anything. Cognac is not neutral, and it still goes with everything, because almost every man already owns it. A pair of brown boots, a belt, a leather watch strap, a weekend bag. Put a cognac bracelet on the same arm and it does not read as an addition to the outfit; it reads as though it came from the same drawer as the rest of it.

The rule that follows: wear cognac when the leather already on you is brown or tan, and take a darker brown when it is not. The one pairing to avoid is warm brown against black shoes, which looks accidental rather than chosen.

Why gold works on this one

Most browns fight warm metal. Cool, greyish browns put gold in an awkward spot - the metal looks yellow rather than rich. Cognac has red underneath it, which puts it in the same temperature family as gold, and the two amplify each other instead of arguing.

That pairing is not a new idea: tan leather with brass hardware is a century of luggage, saddlery, and boat fittings. On this bracelet a gold D-shackle is the version that looks deliberate. Silver cools the whole thing down and reads more modern. Black matte is the quietest of the three and the safest if the rest of your hardware is dark.

What cognac does through the year

It is the autumn colour that does not stop working in summer, which is rarer than it sounds. Against denim it is the oldest warm-on-cool pairing there is. Against white and cream it reads sun-warmed. Against olive and khaki it completes an earth palette - which is why it sits so naturally beside the khaki in this collection. Against grey it is the only warmth in the outfit. The one place to think twice is a black-heavy outfit with black shoes.

Same rope, different weather

Underneath the colour this is the same build as every Fortune: two strands of braided Milan rope, a 316L stainless steel D-shackle, and the red accent thread. The rope is from the fiber family used for sailing line - abrasion-resistant, colorfast, and it barely absorbs water. The red thread

Every bracelet in the Fortune collection carries one, woven between the two strands. It is one of the oldest good-luck signs there is. On cognac it is the only piece in the line where the thread and the rope share a temperature - the red does not contrast, it deepens.

A warm colour on a fiber built to keep it

This rope is braided from the fiber family used for sailing line: it barely absorbs water, dries fast, and holds dye far better than natural fibers. The shackle is 316L stainless steel, the marine-grade alloy. Showers, rain, sweat, and fresh water are non-events for both.

Warm browns show dust before dark colours do

This is the one thing worth knowing about cognac. A red-brown sits in the middle of the tonal range, so both lighter dust and darker grime read against it. Nothing dramatic - just wipe it with a damp cloth more often than you would a black one, and it stays where it started.

Salt water is the one to manage

Salt will not destroy the bracelet, but it crystallizes inside a braid as it dries and crystals scatter light, which flattens a warm colour into a dull one. Rinse in fresh water after the ocean and let it air dry.

Care

• Put it on last, after sunscreen, cologne, and hand cream. Oil settles into a braid and holds dust.
• Shower, rain, sweat, fresh water: no action needed. Salt water: rinse fresh and air dry.
• Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. No bleach, no machine wash.
• Wipe the shackle with a soft dry cloth. It needs nothing else.
• Check the shackle pin is screwed down now and then, the way you would on any rigging part.
• Store it in the Caligio pouch bag rather than loose, where a braid collects dust.

Skin sensitivity

Green wrist marks come from copper alloys. The Fortune shackle is 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and copper-free, the alloy dermatologists point to as the safe default for reactive skin and continuous daily wear.

To define the correct sizing of your wrist, we highly recommend using a tape measure and measuring the circumference of your wrist just above the hand. However, if you do not have a special measure, use a small piece of tape or a cord. Wrap it around your wrist and measure the length against a ruler.
